Lakoma - 2001
A tribute to Thomas Vinterberg’s radical film, “Festen,” Lakoma hosts a banquet where a body-ruled state crumbles away to show its underlying archaic structure.
This is an intricate look at exchange and lust. It is a universe of contrasts where gestural metaphors are mixed with literal interruptions of “reality.” The result is a unique body vocabulary that is spasmodic, tense, implosive, and receptive, and which questions the script of gesture and theatricality in dance. Manipulated voices of lust icons speak through a harmony of classical music in what becomes a jungle of sound.
This six-course dinner creates a textured realm for the exploration of flesh and desire. It is a mosaic of matter and experience around which the search for abstraction shows conflict as a solitary trance and joy as a fraternal energy. An expression of the joyous disillusion of social relationships, it experiments with situations through separations and disintegrations and the differences between body and space.
